Solid Wood: Beware of "Veneer" and "Spliced" Materials

Examine the wood grain and knots: Genuine solid wood furniture features natural, flowing grain, with knots corresponding to each other, and the grain on the two joints transitioning smoothly. Veneered furniture, on the other hand, has overly regular grain, and the joints are stiff or poorly connected.

Check the cross-section: Observe the cross-section of hidden parts such as the cabinet side panels and drawer slides. If the surface layer is wood veneer and the core is particleboard or plywood, it is a counterfeit veneer.

Smell the odor: Natural solid wood has a unique aroma, such as pine resin or a light cypress scent. If it emits a pungent chemical or glue smell, it may be due to formaldehyde released from the engineered wood substrate.

Sound Test: Gently tap a tabletop or cabinet door. Solid wood produces a crisp, resonant sound, while engineered wood produces a dull, muffled sound. A veneered structure will produce a "thump-thump" sound.

Examine Edge Banding: High-quality engineered wood has tight edge banding, no peeling or warping, and uniform seams. Inferior products have rough edge banding and are prone to releasing harmful gases.

Beware of Density Deception: Ordinary wood undergoes compression treatment to increase density, making it feel similar to mahogany. You can judge by comparing the weight of the same volume; unusually heavy weights should raise suspicion of nano-compression fraud.
