Cracks in solid wood furniture can be repaired using filling and professional reinforcement methods. Choosing the appropriate solution based on the size and location of the crack can effectively restore structural integrity and aesthetics.
Small Crack Repair: 502 Glue + Wood Powder Filling Method Suitable for cracks less than 2mm wide. Simple and low-cost operation:
Step 1: Clean the crack, blow away dust with a hairdryer, and ensure the inside is dry.
Step 2: Slowly drip 502 glue into the crack until it is fully absorbed and stops seeping.
Step 3: After the glue dries, sand it smooth with 600-grit sandpaper, then fill it with wood powder that matches the wood color, mix in a small amount of 502 glue, and press firmly to fill.
Step 4: After complete curing (approximately 24 hours), sand and polish again, and finally apply a matching wood wax oil or spray paint to cover the cracks.
Tip: Wood glue or wood product crack adhesive can be used to enhance bonding strength. It will become transparent and leave no residue after drying.
Medium Crack Repair: Epoxy Resin Filling
Suitable for deeper or wider cracks, offering greater stability:
Use epoxy resin glue (such as A+B two-component) to color-match before filling. It has low shrinkage and high strength after curing.
After filling, let it stand for 48 hours, sand it smooth with fine sandpaper, and then apply local color and paint treatment.
Structural Cracks: Professional Reinforcement and Repair
If end cracks, surface cracks, or internal cracks affect load-bearing capacity, it is recommended to have them handled by a professional carpenter:
End Crack Repair: Reinforce the crack with dovetail tenons or bamboo nails, then fill and seal with wood shaving glue.
Surface Crack Treatment: Create a V-groove along the crack, inject glue, embed a thin strip of wood, sand it smooth, and then redo the surface treatment.
Internal cracks (honeycomb cracks): The parts need to be disassembled, and the inside needs to be injected with glue and pressurized for repair. This is considered a deep repair and it is recommended to send it to the factory for treatment.
